I read somewhere recently that phpBB isn't all that great for SEO. I use it, and I really like it because it's free, highly customizable, it's free, has a good developer community, and oh, it's free.

Anyone heard of miniBB? Supposedly produces smaller, lightweight pages that are better for SEO. Believe it's also free, but lacks many of the features and other goodness of phpBB.

Thanks, Gary

What kind of problems have you heard about SEO and phpbb?

Really if you just remove the session id for guests, there is no problem with PHPBB forums getting indexed. If you use a portal I would suggest strong internal linking to individual forums and such.. otherwise though.. Haven't experienced any problems and I run a half-dozen phpbb sites.

I have heard of minibb... If you just want to run a plain setup with little option for modification it might be okay for you. I prefer the vast number of modifications and options that something like PHPBB or VBulletin offer.

There are url rewrite mods for phpbb, but I would strongly recommend that people not use them. They create more problems than they solve, and google has no problem following the regular urls that PHPBB uses for messages.
